Singer, Israel Joshua
- (1893–1944)Yiddish novelist. Son of a Polish rabbi and the older brother of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Israel began writing for Yiddish papers first in Warsaw and then in Kiev. In 1933 he emigrated to the United States and wrote plays for the New York Yiddish Art Theatre. He published two collections of short stories that established his position as a leading Yiddish writer. In 1932 his novel Yoshe Kalb dealt with the 19–century ghetto life he had known. Dramatized by Maurice SCHWARTZ, Yoshe Kalb became a Yiddish folklore character. The Brothers Ashkenazi (1936), an historical novel, was his most important work. This was followed by East of Eden (Yidd. 1938; Eng. 1939) and The Family Carnovsky (Yidd. 1943; Eng. 1969). SINGER, Simeon 1848–1906. English rabbi. Singer was the rabbi of the New West End Synagogue and the compiler and translator of the Authorized Daily Prayer Book in English, which is still in general use.
