Shaffer, Peter

(b. 1926)
   British playwright. One of the outstanding modern British dramatists, Shaffer’s successful plays include Five-Finger Exercise (1958), a conventional story with psychological overtones, and The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1964), an historical spectacle about the Spanish invasion of Peru led by Cortez, and Equus (1973). In 1979 he wrote Amadeus which was turned into an Oscar-winning film and in 1985 Yo-nadab, an adaptation of Dan JACOBSON’S novel The Rape of Tamar.
