Salmon, Alexander

(1822–66)
English settler in Tahiti. Salmon’s career sounds like the purest romantic fiction. The son of a London banker, he ran away to sea as a youth, reached Tahiti on a whaler and married a local native princess. Their daughter became the last queen of the island and their son was a friend of Robert Louis Stevenson. As a spokesman for the islanders, Salmon went to Paris bearing a petition to the Emperor Napoleon in, setting out their grievances against the French colonial government. He was not received and indignantly made the document public in London.
In 1901 the memoirs written by Salmon’s wife, Arii Tamai, were published with the assistance of the American historian, Henry Adams.
