Rosten, Leo

(b. 1908)
American humorist. Rosten was born in Lodz, Poland, but his family settled in Chicago when he was a young child. He was educated at the University of Chicago. During the Depression he took various jobs, including teaching new immigrants English. His first, and perhaps most successful book was based on this experience. Entitled The Education of H*i*M*A*N K*A*P*L*A*N (1937), it is a hilarious account of Hyman Kaplan’s attempts to come to terms with the American idiom. A sequel, The Return of H*Y*M*A*N K*A*P*L*A*N appeared in 1959. Besides these Rosten has also produced a jokey lexicon of Yiddish terms, The Joys of Yiddish.
