Podhoretz, Norman

(b. 1930)
American writer. Podhoretz was born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents and was educated at Columbia, the Jewish Theological Seminary and Cambridge University. After graduation he was appointed to the staff of Commentary, a leading Jewish intellectual periodical, and he became its editor in 1959. He is best known for his memoir Making It which caused huge controversy since he characterized the New York Jewish intelligentsia as being consumed with a lust for success. By the 1970s Podhoretz had become mainly a political commentator and he has become an important voice among the Neo-Conservatives.
