Abse, Dannie

(b. 1923)
Welsh poet. Abse was born in Cardiff and trained as a doctor in London. He has continued his medical career while pursuing his interest in poetry. His published collections include After Every Green Thing (1948), Poems: Golders Green (1962), A Small Desperation (1968), Funland and Other Poems (1973), Way Out in the Centre (1981) and Ask the Bloody Horse (1986). His poems draw on many aspects of his life - his medical experiences, his Jewishness, his relationship with his family and his identification with the British middle class. Although not Orthodox, Abse uses kabbalistic stories and legends to enrich his work. In addition he has written plays for stage and radio, an autobiography, collections of essays and three novels, the best known being Ash on a Young Man’s Sleeve (1954).
