Mendelssohn, Felix (Jakob Ludwig Felix)

(1809–47)
German composer. A grandson of Moses MENDELSSOHN, Felix was baptized as a child by his wealthy, assimilated parents. By the age of sixteen, he was already composing major works of chamber music and wrote the overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream at eighteen. Mendelssohn became Germany’s most famous composer, conductor, pianist and musical educator. He travelled extensively, including a number of trips to England and Scotland, and in 1843 settled in Leipzig, where he opened a conservatory of music. His dazzling success and romantic looks made him feted by society everywhere. But his health started to deteriorate under the strain, and he died at the age of thirty-eight. Mendelssohn’s compositions included five symphonies, Elijah and other oratorios, a great number of concertos for violin and piano, Songs without Words for the piano, and theatre music. His Wedding March remains in regular use.
