Malamud, Bernard

US novelist. Malamud was born in New York City and taught literature in Oregon and at Harvard. His novels and short stories focus realism, compassion and irony on Jewish ‘little men’ trying to cope with a gentile environment. His prize-winning novel, The Fixer (1966), was based on the BEILIS blood libel case of 1913 in Russia. He won a National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for an earlier volume The Magic Barrel (1961) and also produced five other novels and two collections of short stories.
