Lipmann, Fritz Albert

(1899–1986)
   US biochemist and Nobel laureate, 1953. With the rise of Nazism, Lipmann left Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1939, after some years in Denmark. His career in the US was crowned by his appointment as professor at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York in 1957. He shared the 1953 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for work on a compound he called coenzyme A, connected with the way carbohydrates, fats and proteins are broken down in the body for energy purposes.
