Kornberg, Arthur

(b. 1918)
   US biochemist and Nobel laureate, 1959. After a career in the Public Health Service, Kornberg became professor of microbiology at Washington University, and later professor of biochemistry at Stanford University. He shared the 1959 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for the synthesis of the nucleic acid DNA, responsible for forming the heredity-transmitting genes.
