Kemelman, Harry

(b. 1908)
American mystery novelist. Kemelman is the author of a series of novels centred around a small Jewish community and its rabbi, David Small. The books are titled for the days of the week, e.g. Friday the Rabbi Slept Late, Saturday the Rabbi went Hungry. Small solves the murders with Talmudic logic and common sense. The novels are widely read and, perhaps more than any other author, Kemelman has made the reading American public familiar with the practices and philosophies of Judaism.
