Kalisky, Réné

(1936–81)
Belgian writer. Kalisky was born in Brussels and was in hiding throughout the war. He worked as a journalist until 1972 when he settled in Paris. There he concentrated on essays and drama. His essays include L’Origine et L’Essor du Monde Arabe (‘The Origins and Development of the Arab World’, 1968) and Sionism ou Dispersion (‘Zionism or Dispersion’, 1974). His plays include Jim Le Teméraire (‘Jim the Lionhearted’, 1972.) and Dave au bord de la Mer (‘Dave by the Sea’, 1978). Kalisky was convinced that the existence of the State of Israel should not herald the end of Jewish universalism. He was posthumously awarded the Belgian Society of Authors and Dramatic Composers’ Prix Special.
