Itzig, Daniel

(1723–99)
   German financier. Itzig accumulated his fortune by serving Frederick the Great as master of the Mint and helping him to finance the war by issuing debased coinage. He founded a bank and was appointed court banker to Frederick William II. Itzig served as head of the Prussian Jewish community (1764–99) and at-tempted to win concessions on behalf of the Jews. He himself was the first Prussian Jew to be granted equal rights.
