- (1900–71)US archaeologist of the Middle East. Glueck was ordained as a Reform rabbi at Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, in 1923 and then became an archaeologist. He is best known for his excavations in southern Transjordan and the Negev, and his work on the Nabatean culture in that area. He became president of the Hebrew Union College in 1947 and the Jewish Institute of Religion, New York, in 1949. The two amalgamated, and Glueck was mainly responsible for setting up a branch of the combined institution in Jerusalem, the Hebrew Union College Biblical and Archaeological School, in 1963.
