Dassault (Bloch), Marcel

(1892–1986)
French aircraft manufacturer. The son of a Paris doctor, Dassault became an engineer and aircraft designer. Two years after his release from Buchenwald in 1945, he converted to Catholicism and entered French politics, being twice elected to the Chamber of Deputies and serving for a term as a senator (1957–8). He designed and manufactured the Mystère and Mirage fighter planes, renowned through their effective use and adaptation by the Israel Air Force.
The delivery of the last fifty Mirage planes sold by his firm to Israel was embargoed by General de Gaulle in 1967, and the dispute over them was settled only in 1972, when the French government refunded the money paid down in advance.
