Cohen, Lionel Leonard

(Baron Cohen of Walmer)
(1888–1973)
British jurist. Lionel Cohen was descended from a gifted and solid Anglo-Jewish family that settled in England from Amsterdam in 1770. Born in London and educated at Eton and Oxford, he became a successful barrister and a leading authority on company law. He was the main draftsman of the amended Companies Act of 1948, accepted as a model by many other countries. He was made a judge in 1943, and rose to eminence as a Lord Justice of Appeal. On the bench, he was noted for his quick and brilliant mind, his patience and his courtesy.
A public spirited man, Cohen undertook a number of difficult assignments. He was head of the Royal Commission (1946–56) which made awards for wartime inventions, including radar and the jet engine, and on the Council on Prices, Productivity and Incomes (1957–9).
Active in Jewish affairs, he served as President of the Board of Guardians, the Jewish Historical Society, and the Union of Liberal and Progressive synagogues and Vice-President of the Board of Deputies. He took a keen interest in higher education in Israel, especially in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
