Cohen, Leonard

(b. 1934)
   Canadian writer and popular musician. Cohen was born in Montreal and was educated at McGill University. Subsequently he has lived in Greece, England, California, New York and has since returned to Montreal. His works include the novel Beautiful Losers (1966) and several volumes of poetry including Let Us Compare Mythologies (1956), The Spice Box of the Earth (1961), Flowers for Hitler (1964), Parasites of Heaven (1966), Selected Poems (1968) - for which he refused a national award - The Energy of Slaves (1972), Death of a Lady’s Man (1978) and Book of Mercy (1984). He is however best known for the musical recordings of his poems which were highly popular with the youth counter-culture of the 1960s and 1970s.
