- (1842–1918)German philosopher. Cohen was professor of philosophy at Marburg University (1876–1912) and evolved a system of ideas based on a re-interpretation of Kant. He made an important contribution to the understanding of the Jewish religion and ethics, and vigorously defended Judaism against the anti-Semitic criticisms of the German historian Trietschke and others.
