Belmont, August

(1816–90)
   US banker and diplomat. An immigrant from Germany, Belmont started his own New York bank that represented his former employers, the House of Rothschild in Frankfurt. From 1853 to 1858 he served as US chargé d’affaires and minister in The Hague. He was chairman of the Democratic Party National Committee (1860–72). A great patron of the turf, Belmont race-track in New York was named after him.
