Bauer, Otto

Austrian socialist leader. A leading theoretician of the socialist movement in Austria, Bauer was appointed foreign minister in the first republican government set up in 1918, at the end of World War I. He resigned a year later because anschluss with Germany was rejected and the German-speaking districts of the Tyrol were ceded to Italy. Bauer was a member of the Austrian National Council from 1929, but fled in 1934 after the suppression of the workers’ uprising against the right-wing Dollfuss regime. His best-known work was an anti-communist study on capitalism and socialism.
