(d. 43 BC)
Chief minister of Judea, and father of Herod the Great. Antipater was of Idumean (Edomite) stock. About 120 BC the Idumeans had been conquered and converted to Judaism by the Hasmonean ruler HYRCANUS I. The wily and energetic Antipater gained a key position in the Judean state by supporting the high priest, HYRCANUS II, against his brother and rival Aristobolus.
In the Roman civil war, Antipater first supported Pompey, then switched allegiance to Julius Caesar, sending a force of Jewish auxiliaries to assist Caesar’s Egyptian campaign. The title of ethnarch was restored to Hyrcanus II, while the real power in Judea was now exercised by Antipater, as a kind of chief minister. He was able to install his two sons in important offices - Phasael as governor of Jerusalem and Herod (later Herod the Great), then twenty- five, as governor of Galilee. Antipater was poisoned in 43 BC, presumably by political enemies. But he had prepared the ground for the assumption of the throne by Herod a few years later.
