Wise, Isaac Mayer

(1819–1900)
US rabbi and Reform pioneer. As the rabbi of the B’nai Jeshurun Congregation in Cincinnati from 1854, Wise, an immigrant from Bohemia, campaigned for a single all-American union of congregations with a single prayer book, but came into conflict with both the Orthodox and the German Reform movement. Cincinnati eventually became the centre of American Reform, with Wise as the first president of the Hebrew Union College, which opened in 1875, and president from 1889 of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
