Tuchman, Barbara

(1912–89)
   US writer. A writer of contemporary history, Barbara Tuchman gained an international reputation with her Pulitzer prize-winning The Guns of August (1962), a study of the diplomatic background to the outbreak of World War I. (Her grandfather Henry MORGENTHAU, Sr. was at that time US ambassador to Turkey.) Her other books include Bible and Sword (1956), covering the historical connection between Britain and Palestine; The Proud Tower (1966), a collection of historical essays leading up to World War I; and Sand against the Wind (1971).
