Thalberg, Irving Grant

(1899–1936)
   US film producer. The production chief for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, New York-born Thalberg was responsible for a number of celebrated films, including Ben-Hur (1926), The Barretts of Wim-pole Street (1934), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), and The Good Earth (1936). He played a key role in guiding Hollywood through the difficult transition period from silent films to sound. He married the star Norma Shearer, who converted to Judaism.
