Teller, Edward

(b. 1908)
US atomic scientist. Teller was born in Budapest and received his university education in Germany. After Hitler’s rise to power he settled in the USA. During World War II he was one of the team of scientists working on the atomic bomb project at Los Alamos, New Mexico, under J.Robert OPPENHEIMER. Teller made a key discovery in proving the feasibility of a hydrogen bomb and was involved in conflict with Oppenheimer, who insisted that the atom bomb must have priority. After the war Teller, ‘the father of the H-bomb’, was its chief protagonist, whereas Oppenheimer opposed its development because of the dangers to mankind. Teller’s hostility to his former boss came out in the role he played when Oppenheimer was being victimized during the witch-hunting McCarthy era.
